“Dantés” is the pseudonym of a poet who published in La Gaceta, Santa Barbara, during the years 1979-1881. While it’s not certain that Dantés lived in Santa Barbara—research suggests that many of the poets who published in the Spanish-language newspapers of the time lived in Mexico—his poems show an awareness of the Southern California region, its geography and the concerns of its people, that he lived here during the brief period that he was publishing these poems.
