Francis de Sales Gliebe

June 17, 1882 [Smuka, Slovenia] – September 7, 1962 [Santa Barbara, California]

[Born Adolph Gliebe, the son of George and Mary (Kraker) Gliebe, Rev. Father Francis de Sales Gliebe, O.F.M., came to America from Gottschee (Slovenia) with his family in 1889, and settled in Oakland, California. With his brother Joseph, who took the religious name Father Julius, he entered the Saint Barbara Province of the Order of Friars Minor, and studied for the priesthood at Teutopolis, Illinois. After ordination on June 29, 1906, he taught Greek and Latin for some years at St. Anthony’s Seminary in Santa Barbara. He briefly served at St. Mary’s Basilica in Phoenix, Arizona, and was then sent toWashington to serve at the parishes of St. George in Seattle, and St. Rose de Viterbo in Longview. In California, he served at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Los Angeles, St. Francis of Assisi parish in Sacramento, and St. Anthony ofPadua Church in San Francisco. During the 1940s, he served at St. MaryImmaculate parish in Lakeport, California. Father Francis served his later years at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Spokane, Washington, and thenreturned to the friary at Santa Barbara, where he died at age 80. His younger brother Leo, whose religious name was Fr. Richard Gliebe, was also aFranciscan priest who died at age 31, and the three Gliebe brothers are buried at the Mission Santa Barbara.]
